DIG’s Commitment to Gender Equity

Advancing gender equity is fundamental to achieving DIG’s mission to improve the health, wealth, and belonging of the marginalized communities we serve.

In many of the communities where we work, women are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and poor nutrition. Yet they are also uniquely positioned to lead transformational change.

When women are equipped with knowledge, tools, and leadership opportunities, they become powerful agents of progress—not only for their families, but for entire communities.

Women are Central to the Solution

DIG takes a gender-responsive approach at every level of our organization.

83%

of the farmers we train are women.

2/3

of our Country Program Leaders are women.

100%

of our Global Executive Leadership roles are held by women.

By placing women at the center of design, implementation, and decision-making, our programs reflect the realities of those most impacted, and are driven by those most capable of creating lasting change.

Prioritizing Women with the Greatest Barriers

DIG’s Priority Household Program is designed for women who face the steepest challenges, single mothers, women in polygamous households, and those with limited access to education or training. These women are often tasked with feeding their families under the most difficult conditions.

By equipping them with regenerative gardening skills and nutrition education, we help reduce malnutrition, increase household resilience, and create pathways to long-term empowerment.

Women Grow Lasting Change

When women are supported with the right resources and opportunities, they become catalysts for lasting change, nurturing healthier families, strengthening communities, and shaping a more equitable world.

Results from DIG’s Priority Household Program

94%

of participating mothers helped their child recover from his/her acute malnutrition.

“This program changed my life. I’m no longer anxious about feeding my child.” -Aissatou, Senegal (Priority Household Program)

“The garden helps me a lot. Before, we lacked healthy foods, but now we always have something to eat. And most importantly, it’s good for my baby!” – Viviane, Senegal (Priority Household Program)

“I want to be like Monica [DIG’s Lead Mentor Mother]. I want to empower women like me, to help them improve their families’ and children’s lives. Every child deserves to live and see their future.” – Lily, Kenya (Priority Household Program)
