Cultivating Conversations: DIG’s 2024 Salon Series

Whether it’s the divide between urban and rural communities, the gap between the global North and South, or our growing detachment from the land, this sense of separation keeps us from fully understanding the shared challenges that affect us all. At DIG, we believe that connection is the key to a world where everyone has access to nourishing food, sustainable livelihoods, and the dignity that comes with being rooted in community and the land. The DIG Salon Series was born from the belief that real change begins with connection and joy. Building on the 17th century French concept of salons, DIG’s Salon Series provided a space for meaningful conversations that help bridge the gaps between diverse communities, experiences, and perspectives.

“We created the Salon Series to foster authentic dialogue around the critical issues we are collectively facing—climate change, food insecurity, health—and others,” said Sarah Koch, DIG’s Executive Director.  “These global issues affect us all on a personal level, and by understanding where our individual stories intersect, I believe we take an important step toward collective healing and action.”

In 2024, DIG supporters in Detroit, Denver, Oakland, Seattle, Martha’s Vineyard, Croton-on-Hudson, and Big Canoe opened their doors to invite people to gather and explore how food and community shape our lives. These events were not just about talking; they were about listening, learning, and building empathy for our neighbors—both near and far.

“We want to create an environment where people aren’t just donors, but active contributors to the conversation,” says Sarah. “It’s also important for them to understand that DIG’s farmers are not just recipients of support—they are leaders and experts in resilience. If you want to understand how to face climate change head-on, talk to them. If you want to see what it really means to strengthen a local food system that can weather economic instability, look at the work they’re doing every day.”

Our salon hosts have played a crucial role in creating meaningful spaces for connection. Each salon explored tough questions, celebrated small victories, and reimagined what food systems could look like in a world where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive. “We want these events to leave attendees feeling not just informed but inspired to take action in their own communities—and to consider partnering with DIG to make a tangible difference around the world,” says Sarah.

Whether it’s covering the cost of employing a local DIG facilitator, sponsoring a home garden, or pooling resources to start a community garden, every contribution made through the Salon Series goes directly toward advancing food sovereignty and strengthening resilience in the communities DIG serves. This is more than a fundraiser; it’s an invitation to connect—one garden, one conversation, one action at a time.
